SF - Structural Engineer I

*Full-Time position in our Sioux Falls office.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program

Experience:

  • Zero plus years.
  • Exposure to and/or experience in general building construction.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Passed Fundamental of Engineering Exam (FEE)
  • Valid State Driver’s License.

Direction Received:

  • Receives close supervision on all aspects of assignments.

Managerial Responsibilities:

  • None

Essential Responsibilities:

In accordance with established criteria and with Heyer Engineering best practices:

  • Acquires limited knowledge and develops basic engineering skills.
  • Applies prescribed techniques and procedures to perform assigned tasks.
  • provides engineering design services.

Skills/Technical Expertise:

  • Familiar with and has knowledge of (trainee):
    • Routine technical work which does not require previous experience
    • Standard computations or analysis
    • structural survey work
    • drawings and visual aids
    • data collection and gathering of information or documents
    • construction activities
    • Microsoft Office and engineering software (RISA / Tekla)
  • Reviews shop drawings.
  • Recognizes that changes are inevitable and positively implement changes.
  • Sufficient English skills to compose correspondence, proofread documents, communicate tactfully and effectively with administrators, office staff, clients, and vendors.
  • Good oral written communication skills.
  • Interacts with other staff, general public, officials, and contractors.
  • Fieldwork may be included.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Involved in outreach activities with community service organizations

Field and Construction Site Environments:

  • When conducting inspections and investigations, may have exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions

Physical:

  • May occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to talk and hear is required.
  • Good mobility and dexterity: regularly required to stand or sit for long periods of time, walking, bending, and climbing to inspect work areas and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
  • May be asked to do large format filing.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, color vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus and inspect visually designs/drafts and sites.
  • Travel to client/vendor locations.
  • Physically able to conduct field/site inspections.
